Paris airport installs FOD system

PARIS, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- An automated foreign object debris detection system supplied by Thales of France has been installed at Charles de Gaulle Airport in France.

The FODspot system operates at a key taxiway intersection, the company said.

FODspot is a scalable system to secure critical airport areas, such as intersections and FOD-prone hotspots where aircraft and vehicles travel.

Thales describes the system as the "only hybrid automatic FOD detection system that simultaneously uses cameras and radar for active detection of debris, including the unique ascription feature, statistical analysis tools and recording."

"We have selected FODspot as a cost-effective introduction to the latest FOD detection technology," said Gerard Batistella, general manager of Airside Facilities at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport.

"It is expandable to cover the travel surfaces that are the most subject to FOD. The ascription feature allows CDG to take safety to the next level, FOD is not only detected but the source is also identified, enabling investigation and education for future prevention."

Thales was responsible for the installation, integration and support of the FOD detection system. It selected the FOD detection technology developed by its technology and commercial partner, Xsight Systems, for the contract.

The FODspot technology is fully compliant with U.S. Federal Aviation Authority requirements.

Aéroports de Paris (ADP), one of the world's largest airport groups in terms of turnover, air mail and freight handling, has selected FODspot™, an automated Foreign Object Debris (FOD) detection system at Charles de Gaulle Airport, the 10th busiest airport worldwide in terms of aircraft movements. The FODspot™ has been installed at one of the key taxiway intersections, ensuring the safety and secure operation of all passing aircraft from FOD.
FODspot™ is a scalable system designed to secure the most critical areas at airports, such as intersections and FOD-prone hotspots where aircraft and vehicles regularly cross. FOD dropped at these places can cause immediate damage to aircraft or be picked up and dropped further along on the runway resulting in damage to other aircraft.
FODspot™ is the only hybrid automatic FOD detection system that simultaneously uses cameras and radar for active detection of debris, including the unique ascription feature, statistical analysis tools and recording.

Mayo 2011, Rosh Haayin, Israel, X-Sight Systems Ltd. (XSight) y la Autoridad de Aeropuertos de Israel (AAI) se encuentran orgullosos de anunciar la firma de un contrato que permitir? la implementaci?n del sistema FODetect® de Xsight. El FODetect®, sistema ?nico de h?brido ?ptico-radar de detecci?n, ser? utilizado para la detecci?n de FOD en el Aeropuerto Internacional Ben-Gurion (AIBG) en Tel Aviv, Israel. The Israel Airports Authority and X-Sight Systems sign a major contract to equip Ben-Gurion International Airport with an Automated Foreign Object Debris (FOD) Detection System

The FODetect®, a unique hybrid optical-radar sensing system, will be used to automatically detect FOD at Ben-Gurion International Airport (BGIA) in Tel Aviv, Israel. The selection of Xsight’s system places BGIA among the leading airports to adopt this automatic FOD detection technology.

The IAA’s selection of the FODetect® system for BGIA followed a rigorous two year evaluation process. The IAA determined that the Xsight FODetect® system is the best fit to the airport’s runway performance requirements. Furthermore, the IAA is confident that the FODetect® system will reduce the risk of FOD damage to aircrafts and thus increase flight safety for all passengers & cabin crew members alike.

The FODetect® system provides an effective FOD detection solution so that risky and costly damages incurred from FOD can, to a high degree of probability, be avoided. Continuous in-between-movement scanning of the airport runways by the FODetect® system allows for the immediate detection and removal of FOD from active runways. The FODetect® system utilizes unique hybrid high resolution optical-radar sensing technology to effectively detect the object, alert the operator and classify the FOD . Various FOD material types and sizes are reliably detected in most situations including in harsh weather and operating conditions.

As Yair Gannot, the Director of Aviation Safety at the IAA states: “I am very pleased with our decision to proceed with the FODetect® system. After careful consideration, we at the Israel Airports Authority believe that collaboration with Xsight will help to reduce FOD related incidents and increase the overall safety and efficiency at the Ben-Gurion International Airport. Furthermore, this implementation will benefit all of the airport’s stakeholders, from the airline operators, to the pilots and air crew personnel, to the airport operations team, and most importantly all of the air passengers passing through the Ben-Gurion airport.” The contract, signed in March 2011, stipulates that work will be completed over a three year period effective immediately. This year, Israel’s busiest international airport will equip its main takeoff runway with the FODetect® system. The second and third runway installations are scheduled for 2012 and 2013 respectively. Gannot is confident that Xsight’s system will further contribute to operational improvements and effectively enhance safety measures that are currently ongoing at the Ben-Gurion International Airport
