Xsight, the Israeli manufacturer of foreign objects detection (FOD) systems, sees air force customers as a big potential market in the coming years.

The company's FODetect system is already operational at Boston's Logan airport in the USA, Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi international airport in Thailand, Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, France, and Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport in Israel.

Xsight chief executive Alon Nitzan says indications show that 30% of sales in the coming years will be made to air force customers. "The FOD problem is very acute in a base that operates fighter aircraft, many with one engine," he says. "The detection of objects on the runway is part of the base's operational readiness."

Nitzan declines to identify the air forces that have shown interest in the system, but says a first contract is expected next year.

The FODetect system consists of surface detection units on the edge-light bases along the runway and other areas. Each unit uses a 77GHz millimetre-wave radar in combination with a camera and zoom function. Runway sections are scanned in fewer than 30sec, with a detection resolution down to the size of an aircraft nut or rivet.

Nitzan says the double sensor design allows for positive detection and a precise location of the object. "The camera serves as the main sensor, while the radar unit serves as an additional sensor, mainly for poor visibility conditions," he adds.

Using a large number of sensor units provides redundancy, plus the option to scan adjacent zones to give a different viewing angle for identification purposes. Each is connected to a main control centre using the existing power line communication system, or via a fibre-optic network.

Nitzan says Xsight has also received interest from navies operating aircraft carriers, but declines to comment further.

Installation of the equipment - FODetect from the Israeli company Xsight Systems - on the two runways at Suvarnabhumi took five months. FODetect passed site acceptance testing in line with the FAA Advisory Circular on FOD detection equipment. Xsight Systems worked with local integration partner Dan-Thai Equipment on the project. According to Alon Nitzan, president and chief executive officer of Xsight Systems, the FODetect system at Suvarnabhumi has already "detected a hazardous FOD on one of the runways at the airport, which was retrieved immediately, demonstrating the system's efficiency while contributing to runway safety".

PARIS, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- An automated foreign object debris detection system supplied by Thales of France has been installed at Charles de Gaulle Airport in France.

The FODspot system operates at a key taxiway intersection, the company said.

FODspot is a scalable system to secure critical airport areas, such as intersections and FOD-prone hotspots where aircraft and vehicles travel.

Thales describes the system as the "only hybrid automatic FOD detection system that simultaneously uses cameras and radar for active detection of debris, including the unique ascription feature, statistical analysis tools and recording."

"We have selected FODspot as a cost-effective introduction to the latest FOD detection technology," said Gerard Batistella, general manager of Airside Facilities at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport.

"It is expandable to cover the travel surfaces that are the most subject to FOD. The ascription feature allows CDG to take safety to the next level, FOD is not only detected but the source is also identified, enabling investigation and education for future prevention."

Thales was responsible for the installation, integration and support of the FOD detection system. It selected the FOD detection technology developed by its technology and commercial partner, Xsight Systems, for the contract.

The FODspot technology is fully compliant with U.S. Federal Aviation Authority requirements.

Aéroports de Paris (ADP), one of the world's largest airport groups in terms of turnover, air mail and freight handling, has selected FODspot™, an automated Foreign Object Debris (FOD) detection system at Charles de Gaulle Airport, the 10th busiest airport worldwide in terms of aircraft movements. The FODspot™ has been installed at one of the key taxiway intersections, ensuring the safety and secure operation of all passing aircraft from FOD.

FOD dropped at these places can cause immediate damage to aircraft or be picked up and dropped further along on the runway resulting in damage to other aircraft.
